We are pleased to be supporting the John Merricks Sailing Trust.

Donate The Trust supports young sailors and junior sailing projects in financial need. Over the years it has awarded over £335,000 to individuals or projects that seek to further youth sailing.  British Sailing Team member Dylan Fletcher, who competed in the Olympic 49er class in Rio, was awarded a grant by the JMST in 2005. Dylan with crew Rob Partridge, finished 2nd Overall and 1st Youth at the 29er World Championships in 2006.

 

The JMST, a registered charity, provides financial support to help young people sail and to achieve their goals, funding individuals as well as school, Scout and Duke of Edinburgh groups. The Trust has helped set up junior fleets at clubs throughout the country and has funded or part funded over 120 boats which have been and will be used by thousands of children. JMST Award Winner Achievements
After receiving funding from the JMST the following sailors have gone on to achieve notable successes with their sailing.

Stuart Bithell - award in 2002

Stuart Bithell won an Olympic Silver Medal in the 470 class in 2012 and became the first sailor to have received funding from the JMST to win an Olympic medal!

Ian Walker was delighted to announce, “15 years ago the John Merricks Sailing Trust was started by those closest to John with the simple idea that it would be great to help someone who might one day go on to emulate John and win an Olympic medal. The fact Luke and Stu won the same Silver medal as John (470 Silver) seems almost pre-ordained.”

Jonathan McGovern and Stuart Bithell were awarded a grant from the JMST in 2002 and won a Bronze Medal in the 420 boys class at the ISAF Youth Worlds in 2004.

Stuart has now paired up with John Pink and the pair are campaigning a 49’er and are hoping to be heading to Rio in 2016. The pair are currently lying in 1st place at the ISAF World’s in Miami.

Dylan Fletcher – award in 2005

Dylan with crew Rob Partridge, finished 2nd Overall and 1st Youth at the 29er World Championships in 2006.  He is currently in the RYA Podium Squad campaigning a 49er with Alain Sign. The pair won a Silver Medal at the Perth International Regatta 2010, a Silver Medal at the Open Europeans, Helsinki, 2011 and a Bronze Medal at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta in 2012.  The pair are ranked 2nd in the ISAF world rankings (Oct 13).  In January 2014 the pair won the Copa Brasil de Vela, Rio in the 49’er class.

Sophie Weguelin – award in 2004
Sophie has represented Britain at the Optimist Worlds, 420 Worlds and ISAF Youth World Championships in the 420 class.  In 2007, Sophie and her crew Sophie Ainsworth won two Gold Medals (1st &1st Girls) at the 29er Worlds as well as Silver Medal in the 29er class at the ISAF Youth World Championships.

Sophie is currently campaigning with Eilidh McIntyre in the 470 women’s class.  They are in the RYA Podium Squad and are ranked 3rd in the ISAF world rankings (Dec 13). The pair are currently lying in 1st place at the ISAF World’s in Miami.

Izzy Hamilton – award March 2009

Izzy has achieved major success winning two World Championship titles at the RS:X Youth Worlds in Turkey 2009 and Cyprus 2010.  As well as two successive Silver Medals at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Istanbul 2010 and Brazil 2009. Izzy also pulled off a hat trick in 2010, winning the girls RYA Youth National title in the RS:X Class for the third year running.  Izzy is currently in the RYA Podium Squad.

Mike Wood – award in 2006 / Hugh Brayshaw – award March 2010

Mike achieved many successes in his Topper, culminating in winning the Topper Worlds in 2007.  He moved to a 420 campaign with crew Hugh Brayshaw, winning the RYA Youth Nationals in the 420 Class and gained a sixth place at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Istanbul, 2010.  In 2012 and again in 2013, Mike and Hugh won Silver Medals at the 470 Junior European Championships.

Mike is currently campaigning with David Kohler in the 470 class and they are in the RYA Podium Potential Squad. 

Lorenzo Chiavarini – award in 2009

In 2012 Lorenzo was the U19 Laser European Champion and was selected to join the RYA Podium Potential Squad.  In 2010 he reached the podium for Team GBR in the Mens and Youth Laser World Championships, at Largs. In 2011 he won a Bronze medal in the Europa Cup, Germany to earn the opportunity to train with the Laser Olympic Training Squad, a dream from his days as Topper Scottish and GBR Nationwide Champion.

Alex Mills Barton – award in 2011

Alex is now in the RYA Podium Potential Squad and won the Laser National Champinships at Abersoch in 2012.  In 2011 he won the Silver Fleet at the World’s in Perth, a Gold Medal at Laser Youth Europeans and a Silver Medal at the Laser Youth Worlds.  He is currently ranked 11th in the ISAF world rankings (Sep 13).

Connor Bainbridge – award in 2008
Connor was selected for the RYA Team GBR Podium Potential Squad in the RS:X class in 2011.  In 2010, he achieved a 4th place at the ISAF Youth Worlds and in 2011 he won a Silver Medal at the RYA Youth Nationals.

Jade Rogers – award in 2011
In 2011 Jade won the RYA Youth Nationals in the RS:X class and was selected to represent Great Britain at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia where she achieved 7th place in her class.

Sophie Bailey – award April 2008

Sophie achieved Silver Medal place in the RS:X class at the RYA Youth Nationals – April 2010 and was selected to join the National Youth Squad.
